Shipwrecks

At least 23 vessels have been wrecked on Rarotonga, most of them on the reef of Avarua.

Some of the wrecks of the 19th century resulted in heavy loss of live.

The earliest recorded one was that of the whale ship "Orcas" at Avarua in 1833.
